Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
